Rosuvastatin is a selective and competitive inhibitor of 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl coenzyme A (HMG-CoA) reductase, the rate-limiting enzyme in the synthesis of cholesterol. Thus, it inhibits the endogenous production of cholesterol in the liver and reduces the concentration of cholesterol in the blood.
