Humble Beginnings: The Seed of Determination
Born in the serene hamlet of Kalamb in Yavatmal district, Maharashtra, Mr. Sami Khatib grew up as
the youngest of nine siblings in a respected landowning family. Even at a tender age, his dreams
stretched far beyond his village horizons. Leaving home early in pursuit of education, he set out on
a journey that took him through many towns and cities, ultimately shaping the foundation of an
extraordinary life.
Mr. Khatib’s academic accomplishments were as diverse as they were impressive. He earned degrees in BSc, BPharm, LLB, and DBM, studying at esteemed institutions including the University of Mumbai, Laxminarayan Institute of Technology, Government Law College Nagpur, and Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management.
His multidisciplinary knowledge became a cornerstone for his future ventures.
Fresh out of college, armed with vision, intellect, and courage, Mr. Khatib entered the pharmaceutical sector – an industry largely dominated by multinational giants at the time. After gaining valuable early experience, he decided to carve his own path as an entrepreneur.
In 1969, driven purely by ambition and determination, he founded a small but promising venture named “Medley Laboratories”.
The early journey was far from easy. The pharmaceutical industry required large capital investments and was tough for new entrants. But with a modest loan of ₹200,000 from the Technician-Entrepreneur Scheme of the Maharashtra State Finance Corporation, and the unwavering support of his wife, Mrs. Sima Khatib, he moved forward with resilience. His sharp business acumen, dynamic leadership, and relentless commitment transformed Medley Laboratories into Medley Pharmaceuticals Ltd., a respected and impactful organization within the Indian pharmaceutical landscape.
Mr. Khatib emerged as one of the pioneers of the Indian pharmaceutical sector. In recognition of his contribution, he was honored with the Vijay Ratna Award by the Prime Minister of India on 6th March 1991. From 1996 to 1999, he also served on the Drugs Advisory Committee of the Government of India, further cementing his role as a thought leader and nation-builder.
Mr. Khatib believed in leadership with involvement, dedication, and fairness. His management style was inclusive, transparent, and deeply humane. He remained actively engaged in his work until the very end, proving that commitment and passion can define a lifetime.
