The Conservatoire National de Musique François Mitterrand was set up by the Government in 1987. In 1992, it became a Trust Fund by Act of Parliament and is managed by a board of trustees under the aegis of the Minister of Arts and Culture.
In 2006, it started to decentralise its activities and opened branches in Grand Baie, Mahebourg, Port-Louis, Surinam, Flacq and Rodrigues. Each year, about 1,500 students enrol, with over 40 teachers guiding them on their musical journey. Additionally, in 2006 itself, the Conservatoire became a recognised Cambridge Centre, preparing students for music as a subject at GCE ‘0’ and ‘A’ levels.

To promote music through teaching, performing, composing and research.
Objectives
- Organise and run formal music courses in the classical and modern stands from the beginner to professional level;
- Teach music technology;
- Promote music through concerts, ensemble music, exhibitions, workshops, hobby classes;
- Promote the Mauritian musical heritage;
- Advise the Minister on short long term plans for the teaching of music and on the need for appropriate research in the field of music
